Matt's Ukranian grandma, Olga, talks to him about advertising and creativity. She even passes along some tips on how to have a successful career.

Matt’s Ukranian grandma, Olga, talks to him about advertising, creativity, and about what it takes it to be successful.

Grandma Olga: Where do you live now? Your father told me you’re not in New York anymore?

Matt: I’m in Atlanta, GA.

Grandma: What are you doing there?

Matt: Well, short answer: still working in advertising.

Grandma: I saw a good television commercial the other day. It was for the all-you-can-eat buffet at Ponderosa. Did you do that advertisement?

Matt: No, I didn’t.

Grandma: That’s too bad. It was very clever.

Matt: [silence]

Grandma: I bet you’d make a lot more money if you did Ponderosa ads.

Matt: Maybe so, grandma.

Grandma: Do you make enough money to support a family?

Matt: Yeah. A copywriter can make a good living. But you know I like to work on creative side projects. Maybe one of those will turn into something.

Grandma: A copyrighter?

Matt: Yes.

Grandma: What do copyright? Any patents I know?

Matt: Nope.

Grandma: So, you didn’t do the clever Ponderosa ad and you don’t have any patents. Why are you in Atlanta again?

Matt: What do you say we go to Ponderosa?

Grandma: Ooh! That would be lovely.

Jerry McWaters, the night manager at TJ Maxx, interviews Rick about his career goals and experience in the advertising industry.

Rick Hill interviewed by Jerry McWaters, the night manager at TJ Maxx

Jerry: So Rick, you work in advertising. You know, I’ve written a few jingles myself.

Rick: Yeah?

Jerry: I’ve even made youtube videos with family members acting them out.

Rick: Man, that sounds like fun.

Jerry: My mom told me that I have the magic. The magic of being creative.

Rick: You know, moms are never wrong.

Jerry: Even Youtube contacted me and asked if I would make more.

Rick: Man, that’s great.

Jerry: I was like, listen here Youtube, I’m my own man. My ideas ain’t for sale.

Rick: Yeah?

Jerry: Those fools always trying to steal a man’s magic.

Rick: Hey man, do you think you could hook me up with a TJ Maxx discount?

Jerry: Naw, the over-night manager watches me like a hawk.

Rick: Ok, that’s cool. Hey, I need to run. Take care man.

Jerry: Ok Rick, very nice to interview you. Do I get paid for this?
